Published in 1928.  "Gee" and "haw" are contradictory directions (meaning left and right, respectively) that a driver would give to a horse, and Jehu was a Biblical figure who drove a chariot.  Dr. Shadduck was commenting on the doublemindedness of the 'modernist' tenets that were infiltrating the evangelical church of his day.
